Have fun, that’s an order!

I am writing this for the people who would naturally like their work, were it not for pressing deadlines, frustrations over audio quality, and the million other things that get in the way of enjoying the process as an artist.

Years ago, I created an online dance instructional website, with the aim to sell subscriptions and supplement my meagre income. I had a good idea, a partner who was willing to help me film the lessons (my wife), a good camera, and a dream.

It was helluva fun.

Start Simple, Silly

TRUTH: Every single sound we hear can be reproduced using layers and layers of nothing but sine waves.

Incredibly time-consuming? Maybe. But it CAN be done.

On the other hand, many music producers start with pre-made samples, and adjust them to fit the needs of their tracks.

I appreciate that sample manipulation is in no way “easy” – it’s as much of an art as building sounds from scratch. BUT I believe it skips the fundamental stages of sound design, which is needed to achieve mastery.

Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.

A Few Things I Learned From Blake La Grange

So I jumped in on a mastering workshop today, through MusicianOnAMission – love their material, take a look – taught by full-time engineer Blake La Grange.

Phew, all that name-dropping’s got me out of breath.

Anyway *eye roll*, the class seriously made me question how I’d been doing some things, but where it really blew me away was Blake’s philosophy.
