Full disclosure: This one will likely be a rambler. But in the second half, I’ll tell you about what’s going on in my music life, so that’s cool, right??
And if not, there’s always Uncle YouTube to keep you occupied.
One thought I have frequently is “I wonder how learning to be good at something feels to other people?” Is it pleasurable or painful to push yourself, and how much? Does the journey tax you physically/emotionally/spiritually?
For me, at least for the moment, it’s very much an emotional rollercoaster. There’s this part of me that’s constantly checking in, asking, “how are we feeling right now?”
It’s become an ingrained thing, because I know if I don’t manage it, the stress and anxiety (“am I doing this right? Ugh, this sounds terrible, I should just start over..”) gets so strong I’ll need to cocoon in bed for awhile.
That makes sense for me, because anxiety is a regular part of my life, but how about you? Lemmie know!
The good news is, on days when the stress is low, doing the actual work is great! I can literally spend hours making a drum or a synth sound just right (I did that just yesterday, so maybe that’s something I’ve got on the competition. A gent can dream…
Speaking of music-making, I found myself compelled to try something new this time. I KNOW, you’re supposed to pick a genre and stick with it, blah blah, but I’m still figuring out what kind of music I want to make, so…
I’m still playing with sounds and figuring out where to stick ’em, but the general idea is to create something more like epic fantasy.. But with a sick beat!
Yeah, well see.
In other news, I “might” be collaborating with another recording studio, and they actually want me to help with something more technical! Hurray!
I’m still an untrained monkey compared to these guys, so it’ll be basic stuff like setting up mics and whatnot, but still, it’s a step forward.
And speaking of microphones, I’ve been digging deep into how the suckers work to prep myself for said collaboration. It’s actually super interesting, so definitely expect an article on that in the near future.
